chapter 12 question2
I'm a believer in the mutability premise which assumes human behavior is based upon one's environment. The best way to improve man is to improve man's environment. While I don't feel it's possible to prefect man, use of the mutability premise can be found in the ways in which the government has addressed the issue of childhood nutrition and education. In providing government assistance in the form of food vouchers, the idea is no child should go hungry which in turn will make them better prepared to participate in their own education. The mutability premise is the basis for the public education system in the united states. The rationality premise is the basis the trust given to the average joe's ability to make good judgment and the perfectibility premise is the basis for Purtian religious ideology.

Hi nyp,
ReplyDeleteI like the example that you gave for mutability premise. The education for children is a good example for mutibility. Other nations do not put so much importance on education as we do it the US. I think we also put alot of importance on education because we tend to think that if some kids were not in school they may be out doing bad things. This is also prevelent with after school sports programs.
I think another example would be CalGrants. We are saying with those that we want to give you the chance to become the best person you can but you have to make the choice to go. We are giving them the right environment in college to help them become a better person and take every opportunity they can in the University environment. If they were not in that environment they may not make as good as choices in the future.
Good posting!
