chapter12 question3
one concept in the reading i found very helpful was that of acculturation-the process of adapting to a new culture. as a traveler, i find this process extremely important if one is to truly partake in the culture. one of the first times i traveled abroad it was kind of a culture shock to be in a foreign country, belgium, not speak the language and being a teen, initially i didn't know how to relate to the culture i was experiencing which made me unhappy. but my openness and overall resiliency allowed me to overcome linguistic barriers and enjoy the experience on its own terms. once i was able to appreciate the cultural exchange as just as enriching although different from my own culture i was able to relax and enjoy.

Hi NYP!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your post this week. I agree that the concept of acculturation was both interesting and useful when understanding how people adapt to new cultures. I have been to many different countries and have experienced both embarrassing and peculiar situations when I traveled abroad. I thought it was also interesting how you stated that your "resiliency and openness" helped your experience become more successful and happy. I agree that being open and friendly can help you have a better experience when traveling abroad, but there are some countries where having these qualities might set you back also. I know in countries like Germany and Russia it is very difficult to make friends with strangers because unlike western cultures, friends only arise after long and careful scrutiny. I enjoyed reading your post this week! Good job
